Q With Accent (ɋ, Ɋ) — How to Type It on Keyboard (Windows, Mac, Word, Google Docs)

“Q with accent” usually refers to the special letter q that has a hook tail. It comes in two forms:

  • ɋ = lowercase q with hook tail
  • Ɋ = uppercase q with hook tail

People use these characters in phonetics, transliteration, academic writing, and some language/linguistics text.

Method 1 (Windows): Type Q With Accent Using Alt Codes

This method uses Alt codes (Windows only). It’s quick if your keyboard has a number keypad.

Steps

  1. Click where you want to type the letter.
  2. Turn Num Lock ON.
  3. Hold down Alt.
  4. Type the Alt code on the number keypad.
  5. Release Alt.

Alt codes

  • Alt + 587 → ɋ (lowercase)
  • Alt + 586 → Ɋ (uppercase)

If it doesn’t work

  • Make sure you’re using the number keypad, not the number row above your letters.
  • If you’re on a laptop without a keypad, try the Word method (Unicode + Alt+X) or Character Map below.

Method 2 (Microsoft Word): Unicode + Alt+X (Most Reliable)

This is one of the best methods inside Microsoft Word, because it works even when Alt codes don’t.

Steps

  1. Type the Unicode value (shown below).
  2. Press Alt + X.
  3. Word converts it into the character.

  • Type 024B then press Alt+X → ɋ
  • Type 024A then press Alt+X → Ɋ

Method 3 (Mac): Character Viewer (Emoji & Symbols)

On Mac, the easiest method is Character Viewer, where you can search and insert the character.

Steps

  1. Press Control + Command + Space to open Character Viewer.
  2. Search for: “q with hook tail”.
  3. Double-click ɋ or Ɋ to insert it.

Method 4 (Google Docs): Insert Special Characters
